Australian companies developing industrial laser marking, welding, cutting, cleaning, or wire-stripping systems often need specialist engineers from overseas. The arrangement may involve a foreign employee relocating to Australia, a consultant working remotely from another country, or a project team split between Australia and an overseas manufacturing partner. Each model creates different tax, payroll, and reporting obligations.

The commercial objective may be technical: improving beam quality, selecting a source for carbon-fibre panels, or integrating automation with a production line. The tax treatment depends just as heavily on where the engineer performs the work, who controls the engagement, and whether the project qualifies as eligible research and development. Determine where the work is performed

An engineer’s tax position begins with location. A person who moves to Australia and performs services here may become an Australian tax resident, depending on their usual place of abode, intention, duration, family connections, and economic ties. Australian tax residents generally declare worldwide income, while non-residents are usually taxed on Australian-sourced income.

A short assignment does not automatically avoid Australian tax. An engineer spending several months in Melbourne commissioning a laser welding cell may have Australian employment income even if the employment contract was signed overseas and salary is paid into a foreign bank account. Technical decisions should be documented in language that shows uncertainty and experimentation.
